| Description |
English: Long shadows, Hessle, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The shadow of the north tower of the Humber Bridge stretching out across Hessle on a February afternoon. The Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world for 16 years after it opened in 1981. With its two 155.5 metre high towers some 1,410 metres apart, the bridge was the first feat of engineering to take the curvature of the earth into account as the towers are slightly wider apart at the top than they are at the base. The horizontal strut near the top of the shadow in the picture is actually only about halfway up; after that the shadow narrows on the broken terrain and presumably ends somewhere in the north of Hull. |
