Summary[edit]

Description
English: Looking south into Chwarel Fawr This quarry, which dates back to the 1800s, is the topmost of a line of deep pits which extend from Llyn Padarn to the summit of Cefn Du. The pit is very deep and partly flooded. The tunnel or 'lefal' at the centre of the photo leads to the Bwlch y Groes-Waunfawr road and for many decades finished slate was transported by horse drawn wagons down that road to Caernarfon. Later, a tramway was built to link the quarry with the top of the newly extended Ffridd Incline with slate being sent down to a loading point on the LNWR Caernarfon-Llanberis line. The tunnel was blocked up following a fatal accident in the early 1960s.
In the 1880s, Chwarel Fawr amalgamated with the nearby Cefn Du Quarry. The tramway to the top of the Ffridd incline was then abandoned and a tunnel, now also collapsed, constructed to link the two quarries. From then on, until the quarry's closure in the 1930s, all the workable slate was sent to the mill at Cefn Du. The finished roofing slates were then taken on the Cefn Du internal connection tramway to the Ffridd Incline.
