Description
English:
Wild Flowering Peach and Improved Variety: Nearly all wild forms of plant life are susceptible of improvement comparable to that shown... Mr. Burbank is always on the lookout for variation among individuals of a species. Wherever such variation occurs it may be accentuated by selective breeding. As a rule further variation is stimulated by hybridizing experiments. In making such an experiment, Mr. Burbank usually has in mind many qualities. In such a case as the above, for example, not only size and color of blossom, but profusion and certainty of bearing would be among the characters carefully watched.

Some illustrations of what might be calledextreme measures to prevent such inadvertentself-fertilization, were given earlier in the presentchapter. Let us note a few additional instances, with reference in particular to flowers that arelargely pollenated by the bee. A simple and effective method of guardingagainst self-pollenation we have seen illustratedin the common geranium (Pelargonium). When the geranium flower first opens, a littlecluster of anthers may be seen on the tip of theerect filament in the center of the bright, showyflower. At this stage the undeveloped stigma liesclosely folded up and wholly unreceptive amongthe stamens. But soon after the pollen has beenshed or gathered, the anthers drop off; then thestigma spreads out its five receptive lobes fromthe tips of the connecting filaments, and is readyto receive pollen from another flower. Thestigma holds a similar position, but is farther outtoward the mouth of the tube. The stigma is avery interesting structure; it is composed of twoflattened lips, which respond to the slightest touch. Wh
