Summary[edit]

Description
English: Maen y Bugael or West Mouse - the graveyard of many a ship Maen y Bugael (or Bigael) means shepherd's rock. It lies 1.1km from the mainland and has an area of 1.2 sq.km. The currents that flow past it are particularly strong. In the days of sailing ships strong tidal currents could, even under calm conditions, sweep ships on the rock. It was witnessing the wrecking under such conditions of the Howth-Holyhead packet - the "Alert" - in March 1823, with the loss of some 143 lives, on the West Mouse that stirred the newly wed James and Frances Williams, the Rector of Llanfairynghornwy and his wife, to form the Anglesey Association for the Preservation of Life from Shipwrecks and the establishment of a number of lifeboat stations on the island, starting with the one at Cemlyn.
