Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Magdalen Chapel, Cowgate Pre-Reformation Chapel, founded by Michael Macquhen and his wife Janet Rhynd and built in 1540-44. After the death of Janet, who was buried in the Chapel, it was managed by the guild of Hammermen. It is one of the few religious foundations whose stained glass escaped the fury of the mob during the Reformation. One window shows the arms of the Catholic Regent, Mary of Guise. When the Duke of Argyll was beheaded on the Maiden in 1661 https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1341180, his body was brought here to be collected by his family, while his head was displayed on a spike at the Tolbooth. The steeple was added in 1618 and the enclosing tower in 1625. The Chapel is now owned by the Scottish Reformation Society and has been declared one of the three most important surviving buildings in Edinburgh by the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments.
