Summary[edit]
DescriptionMaiden's Castle and Poll Carn - geograph.org.uk - 1583324.jpg |
English: Maiden's Castle and Poll Carn These fine tors are all that remains of volcanoes that erupted c.600 million years ago (towards the end of the Precambrian). The tors are situated at the eastern end of a ridge of high ground which extends from Roch (near Newgale Sands) to Treffgarne Gorge. The ridge is composed of rhyolite lava (which probably solidified in the vents of the volcanoes) and tuff (rock formed from fine ash deposited by violent eruptions similar to those of Mount St Helens).
A leaflet describing the geology and geomorphology of this area (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) is available from the gift shop at nearby Nant y Coy Watermill http://www.nantycoy.co.uk situated on the A40 between Haverfordwest and Fishguard. Several walks start from the lay by adjacent to the mill and cafe, including a gentle stroll (*small charge contributes to upkeep of permissive path) up Nant y Coy Gorge, eroded by glacial meltwater towards the end of the Ice Age, and now occupied by a tributary of the Western Cleddau and the mill leat. The walk returns to the mill through hay meadows managed for nature conservation, with information panels to aid identification of wildlife. Towards the end of the summer, punnets are provided for blackberry picking. Longer walks (see OS Explorer OL35 1:25,000 map) lead past the tors and along the ridge from where there are fine views towards Treffgarne Gorge and the Preseli Hills. |
