Summary
[edit]DescriptionManchester Victoria Exchange westbound freight geograph-2767068-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Westbound freight at Manchester Victoria/Exchange. View eastward, up Miles Platting Bank towards Yorkshire: ex-LNW/L&Y Railways - an evocative scene along the joint Platform 3/11 in the latter days of Steam. The Class K local goods train is headed by Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48263, which had had a complex history. It was built as an oil-burner by NB Loco in 10/41 as WD No. 506 and shipped to Persia (via Capetown) in 12/41, for use on the infamous Ahwaz - Bandar Shah line (as Iranian Railways No. 41.216). It was moved to Egypt in 1946 and eventually returned to Britain in 5/48, being overhauled and put to work on the LMR as 48263 in 9/49. It was eventually withdrawn in 8/66. |
