Thomas Wetherby (d.1445), Mayor of Norwich in 1432, buried in the Austin Friars' Church in Norwich, was a leading citizen of the City of Norwich, in Norfolk, as is related in Hudson & Tingey, Selected Records of the City of Norwich, Vol.1, 1906, pp.328 et seq [1]:
"Wetherby's Contention", The second of the great troubles which marked this period resulted in far more disastrous consequences than the first, and was mainly the cause of those that followed. From I May, 1433, till 12 November, 1447, the city knew no peace. The originating cause of the disturbance was not, as before, undue straining of jurisdictional claims, but internal faction. The voluminous records which have been preserved agree in attributing the mischief almost entirely to the factions and unpatriotic conduct of a leading citizen, Thomas Wetherby. His opponents accuse him of over-weening pride and a desire to rule the city wholly after his own will
In 1440 Thomas Wetherby, lord of the manor of Brundall in Norfolk, 7 miles (11 km) east of the city of Norwich, had an interest in the parish of Swerdeston and in in a south window of Swerdeston Church survives the arms Vert, a chevron between three rams passant argent armed or (Source: Francis Blomefield, 'Hundred of Humble-Yard: Swerdeston', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 5 (London, 1806), pp. 49-54 [2]).
  • Right: Arms of Peverel of Bradford Peverel, Dorset (Gyronny of eight argent and gules) (Source: John Hutchins, History of Dorset, Vol.I, 1774, p.445[3]). Signs of the Zodiac above: Sagitarius impaling Taurus/Pisces (?)
