alittle gateway, which rendered it a safe place forthe children. In the morning the merchant satthere smoking his long pipe. At eventide thewhole family life, whenever weather permitted, transacted itself on these Beschlags in the open, where neighbour could greet neighbour. At the end of the street St. Marys Church,or Fat Mary, as the common appellation is, standsbefore us. It is the largest Protestant churchin the world, with accommodation for 25,000worshippers. The interior of the Church with itsthree splendid aisles and its thirty side chapels makesa mighty impression. It is a museum of mediaevalart. Its wonderful carved work came from thehands of Michael of Augsburg, a pupil
