Description

"Film actress Marilyn Maxwell stops to kiss Charles M. Gibbs, Jr., pharmacist's mate third class. Gibbs was attached to the 4th Division on Iwo, his first action, and was wounded in the right leg by machine gun fire five days after D-day. He has been hospitalized for over 2 months. A 1941 graduate of Erwin High School, Erwin, North Carolina, Gibbs studied for 2 years at Davidson College, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Navy April 25, 1943 and went through boot training and Hospital Corps School at Bainbridge, Maryland. In May 1944 he was assigned to the Marine Corps and after fireld work at Lejeune, went overseas in August 1944. Photo by SSgt Joe Calden."
