Summary[edit]

Description

Attached to a Marine Corsair Squadron since the start of the Okinawa operation, Lt. Mendinhall has already completed 30 combat missions in this area. A graduate of Friends School, Wilmington Del., he was attending Wesleyan U. Middletown, Conn., when he interrupted his studies in July 1943, to enter the service. Photo taken as fighting continued on Okinawa. May, 1945.

Signal Corps Archive Note: Unfortunately John was killed on May 31 in action as a result of a plane crash at sea, 40 miles off Point Bolo, Okinawa. The aircraft he shot down was credited on May 18 meaning this photo was taken sometime in the last 2 weeks of his life. He was assigned to VMF-441 and was awarded posthumously, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Gold Star in lieu of a second Air Medal - Up to a 7th Gold star and the Purple Heart.
