English: Market Place, Selkirk. Photographed on a very overcast day, this shows the 3 main features of the Market Place
The square Pant Well (built in 1898) still marks the commercial centre of the medieval burgh. Just left of centre stands the large statue of Sir Walter Scott, erected in 1839. Behind the statue is the courtroom in which Sir Walter Scott acted as Sheriff of Selkirk from 1799 until his death in 1832. It is now a museum which explores his life, his writings and especially his time as a Sheriff. |
