Transcript InfoField | English: “Waterloo 1st mo 20th 1854 My Dear Brother Richard I will again commence a letter to thee We have received but one from thee this week and that thee sent without any direction on it. I suppose thee was in such a hurry thee forgot to direct it. James Stewart handed it to Mr Birdsall and told him it was from thee it is a great wonder we received it. Thee will have to look at them as thee hands them into the cars for they might be lost but I do not mean to send thee a lecture only to inform thee that thee may be more careful. I suppose thee was very glad to hear from Willie Mellor & John Alliger he brought it here for me to enclose in mine. Lydia & Hannah Fuller are at Aunt Margarets. I believe they intend to spend a week or two with them. Uncle George is quite well at present was in here a few minutes ago and invited me to come up & spend the evening with them but I think I shall remain home as there is no one to come for me but Maria. so I guess I will stay at home [crossed out] Willie has a great notion of writing notes to thee he thinks it is great fun. Thee has not mentioned your recieving those apples Father sent. I suppose you have heard of the great fire in Rochester have you not? how is cousin Lizzie’s picture progressing give much love to her for me and tell her that I intend to write to her sometime or other I have never written to her since s he has been in Syracuse. You seem to have quite a housefull I think by thy letter. Does thee expect to send any Valentines this year. I do not expect to never sent but two in all my life. please excuse this pen writing for the ink is very thin[sic]k we forgot to get a fresh supply on seventh day with Love I remain as ever thy affectionate sister. Mary" “Dear Brother Richard well! we are not writing to thee again of which I suppose thee is very glad. Cousins Sarah and Julia attended a fancy dress party night before last, Sallie went as a quakeress and Julie as a Gipsy. Her dress was very pretty it consisted of a skirt of white with three rows of red and three rows of yellow calico on the skirt her waist was of red velvet with Tin stars on both sides the sleeves were large and fastened with a piece of red ribbon in each just at the wrist – her hat was perfectly flat having no crown and through the top of it went a piece of red and yellow ribbon she also had a pair of very long ear drops – they were made by Isaac Fairchild I believe, his sister Jude went in the same costume of cousin Julie, but I think I have given thee enough of this – Susan returned sixth day, Aunt Margaret with Lydia and Hannah Fuller and Mother were invited at Uncle Thomases to dinner to day – but Mother did not go on account of Joel and Mary Ann Lundy’s being here, I think I must close so Goodbye from they aff sister Sarah” “Mother Father and myself send our love to Cousins Lizzie and Burroughs & all Sallie.” [Willie wrote two small notes folded like letters and sealed with wax. They are written in pencil and the larger of the two letters has a penciled border, vinelike with leaves and flowers] Willie writes: “My Dear Brother Richard Father thinks of selling all his sheep & cattle he agoing to sell al his stock but his [yearling?] cattle. Tom [colt] kicked a lamb yesterday and broke one of his legs & today he broke the [slice?] he cant stand up now. when we went to see [same word as previous bracket] cattle one of the [ several words covered by seal] did not like much for one had a [ ] his [ ] board [word filled in with ink] over his face and the other was blind in one eye the next letter the girls send I will write too I think I send [ several words covered by seal]” Willie's second note reads: “Dear brother Richard There was a horse here yesterday that looked much like Flashy. Father & I rode out 6 miles in the country to look at some oxen. he offered the man $100 and a red ox for the team and [ ] one. It is very cold to-day and was so yesterday Father has bought us each a suit of pretty summer clothes. Old Buck and Bright are getting [ ] Fathere dont know but he will sell those large brindle oxen. Thee wants answer thy letter farewell thy brother Willie Hunt” |
