Then, in 1868, the 3^ear that Stanford,Huntington, Crocker and Hopkins built the Central Pacificrailroad across the Sierra Nevada to connect with the UnionPacific and thus united the two oceans by rail, he foundedhis first colony. It was located near the present site of thesmall settlement of Borden in what has since become a portionof Madera County. No doubt Chapman, the rich possessor of a problematicalempire, had noted the first attempts, then under way, to divertwater from the Kings River for irrigation. His colony nearBorden was to be supplied with water taken from the FresnoRiver. Its waters were largely dependent upon seasons of rainand its course became dry early in the season. Whether fromthis cause or from others. Chapmans first venture, knownas the Alabama Settlement, was not a notable success.But its colonization had brought a large number of peoplefrom the Southern States
