Then, in 1868, the 3^ear that Stanford,Huntington, Crocker and Hopkins built the Central Pacificrailroad across the Sierra Nevada to connect with the UnionPacific and thus united the two oceans by rail, he foundedhis first colony. It was located near the present site of thesmall settlement of Borden in what has since become a portionof Madera County. No doubt Chapman, the rich possessor of a problematicalempire, had noted the first attempts, then under way, to divertwater from the Kings River for irrigation.
