| Description |
English: Medlar tree, Winchester The tree is growing the Dean Garnier Garden.
The medlar is a small, long-lived tree with gnarled grey bark and a crooked trunk. Its large, pale green, oblong leaves are almost stalkless, with downy surfaces. The solitary white flowers, which five frilled petals, open in May. After pollination, the flower develops into a pear-shaped yellowish-brown fruit. Hard sour medlar fruits are gathered in October and stored until they become soft, when they are either made into jelly or eaten as a desert. |
