hesis Paljeozamia, pointed out the greatinterest attaching to them from their striking analogy with Stonesfield-slate fossils. DArchiac (Hist. deg. prog, a. 1 Geologic, VII, 624) pointedout the confusion in Captain Grant^s desijtiption, but accepting his state-ments referred the plant-bearing beds to the horizon of the lower sand-stone and shale of Phillips* divisions of the oolite, and the same lowerJurassic age has been accepted as established by several subseqiient writers. It is not improbable that further research may fully establish this con-clusion. But there are several curious anomalies in the flora of thisEajmahal series which prevents my admitting this age as established upto the present. I should prefer leaving the point open, admitting onlythis general conclusion, that the Rajmahal series of Indian Geology mustlie between the bottom of the cretaceous system and (? the top of)the lower Jurassic group. General Topography. The River Bokaro, wliose valley extends alocg- the foot of the south-ern scarp of the Hazareebagh plateau, gives its name to this coal-field.Mr. Williams, the first who ever geologically examined this portion ofthe basin of the upper Damoodah, conferred the title, for the reasonthat the River Bokaro flows for a distance of 27 miles through thefield, and is the stream of greatest importance draining the area towhich this report refers. Perhaps it would have been better, however,if he had chosen the name of the lofty hill of Loogoo
