This secondColonel John Vassall was born in 1738, married Elizabeth Oliver,sister of the last royal lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts, wasexiled in 1776, as already related, and, although his estates inMassachusetts were confiscated, lived in comfort on the revenuesfrom his Jamaica estates until his death at Clifton, England, in1797. Leonard Vassall, of the Wayte Garden house, had a brotherWilliam born in Jamaica. Williams son was Florentius Vassall,1710-1779, who in 1766 erected the monument to his great-grand-father, Samuel Vassall, in Kings Chapel, Boston. His son,Richard Vassall, 1731-2-1795, married Mary Clark, daughter ofThomas Clark, of New York. They had one child, ElizabethVassall, 1770-1845, whose second husband was Lord Holland,the English statesman. Mrs. Richard Vassall, after the death ofher husband, married Sir Gilbert Affleck, second baronet, ofDalham Hall, Suffolk, and died in 1836, aged 86. 72

At the head of theloyalists stands Sir William Pepperell, Baronet, grandson of theconqueror of Louisburg, upon whom was conferred the onlybaronetcy ever granted to a native of New England. Next toPepperell stands William Franklin, last royal governor of NewJersey and son of Benjamin Franklin. At the right hand standsthe artist, who succeeded Sir Joshua Reynolds as president of theRoyal Academy, together with his wife, both natives of Pennsyl-vania. It is gratifying to Americans to know that Benjamin Westdeclined the knighthood which was offered him by George III. 73 A Crucial But Forgotten Episode of the Revo-lution and Its Significance onIts 142nd Anniversary In his Life of Thomas Paine, Moncure D.
