Summary
[edit]DescriptionMemorial to the 29th Division, dedicated 1921 - geograph.org.uk - 1432543.jpg |
English: Memorial to the 29th Division, dedicated 1921. It was sited by the junction of the Fosse Way and the London Road (A45), then a crossroads, at the point from which King George V reviewed the troops before their departure for Gallipoli in 1915. It was on a low mound, flanked by captured German guns. In 1984 the junction was remodelled as a roundabout to reduce accidents, its western side becoming the setting for the memorial. Approached from the west it gains in presence 37611. Other views, such as this of the back, looking north up Fosse Way, appear incongruous because of all the highway paraphernalia close to it: classic 20th century. The trees form part of a long avenue across Dunsmore Heath, originally planted in the 18th century, replanted with limes in 1918 and adopted as a setting for the 1921 memorial. |
