ALEXANDER, DUKE OF HAMILTON. those of the temple of Jupiter Stator at Rome.The main front of the building- faces the garden,and looks north, the Beckford library standing outon the west wing, the new state apartments on theeast. A remarkable feature in the massivestructure is the entrance hall, which is a wall ofcolumns placed in five rows, and supporting agroined stone ceiling, lit by windows on the gardenfront, and ornamented with busts on pedestals,among which are prominently placed those ofPeter the Great with the Empress Catherine,which remind the visitor that the Duke Alexanderwas ambassador to Russia. It is to this Dukethat is due the merit of having formed the ex-traordinary assemblage of works of Art as well asthe library distinguished by his name from theBeckford library. He appears, indeed, to havebeen a virtuoso of heroic mould, for he not onlysurrounded himself with all this magnificence of Artwhile he lived, but he built for himself a sepulchralmonument or mausoleum, and
