"Queridos amigos em todo o mundo, Feliz Ano Novo!

Há um ano, quando iniciei o meu mandato, lancei um apelo à paz para 2017. Infelizmente o mundo seguiu, em grande medida, o caminho inverso. No primeiro dia do ano de 2018 não vou lançar um novo apelo. Vou emitir um alerta ao mundo.

Os conflitos aprofundaram-se e novos perigos emergiram. A ansiedade global relacionada com as armas nucleares atingiu o seu pico desde a guerra fria. As mudanças climáticas avançam mais rapidamente do que os nossos esforços para as enfrentar.

As desigualdades acentuam-se. Assistimos a violações horríveis de direitos humanos. Os nacionalismos e a xenofobia estão aumentando. Ao começarmos 2018, apelo à união. Acredito verdadeiramente que podemos tornar o mundo mais seguro.

Podemos solucionar os conflitos, superar os ódios e defender os valores que temos em comum. Mas só poderemos fazê-lo em conjunto.

Apelo aos líderes em todo o mundo para o seguinte compromisso de Ano Novo: Estreitem laços. Lancem pontes. Reconstruam a confiança reunindo as pessoas em torno de objetivos comuns.

A união é o caminho. O nosso futuro depende dela. Desejo a todos paz e saúde em 2018.
