| Description |
English: Milestone at Arlingham Passage The last of a series of 6 from the Gloucester-Bristol road near Claypits to the Passage. The stones are slightly tapering and something between oval and circle in plan. The road was turnpiked in 1726 as part of the Gloucester Roads, and the stones are probably also 18C. None of them bears an inscription; perhaps it has eroded away, or was painted on. Old OS maps show distances to Gloucester (14) and London (115). Using the ferry to Newnham might have been a muddy affair, as there was no jetty. |
