d the tip of the catheter is en-gaged in the carrying tube of thecystoscope. As the catheter is fedthrough the cystoscope the linen bagis pulled back; in this way the fingersdo not come in contact with thecatheter. Ureteral catheters can be sterilizedby placing them in an open shallowdish containing a saturated solutionof ammonium sulphate or sodiumchlorid and boiling them for five orten minutes. The following precau-tions must be observed: Each cathetershould be wrapped in gauze and thebottom of the pan covered with gauze.If the catheters are allowed to toucheach other or curl upon themselves the shellac coating will melt and ruin the instruments. They may also be sterilizedin the same manner as the cystoscope, care being taken if formalin has been usedto wash away carefully the germicide, especially from the lumen of the catheter. Contra-indications to Cystoscopy.—The bladder must hold at the very least50 c.c. of fluid. If it holds less cystoscopy is useless. Examination is either
