Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Moss with sporophytes Does moss have sex? The answer, perhaps surprisingly, is YES! And it is a complicated business.

When conditions are right, male and female structures develop on the same or on different plants, and these produce sperm cells and egg cells respectively. When ripe, and in damp weather, the sperm swim to the eggs for fertilization to take place. The result is a sporophyte (one of these stalk-like structures)which grows on top of the female portion and bears a capsule on top. The capsule contains up to a million spores which are only released when the air is dry enough for them to float away and disperse, and a few may drop on to suitable damp terrain to permit germination. Moss can also reproduce vegetatively as when a piece becomes detached and regrows elsewhere - simpler perhaps but not such fun.

NB. Not being a specialist, I hesitate to put a name to this particular variety of moss.
