5部の重要な短編の禅書からなる。「信心銘」「永嘉真覚大師証道歌」「十牛図」「坐禅歌」「入衆日用」。中国で別に行われていたものを日本でまとめ、鎌倉時代以降に刊行流布したものとみられ、編者も確かではない。版画を主とした「十牛図」は南宋の廓庵師遠撰。牛を題材とした絵と解説によって禅修業の過程を表現したもので、版本における初期の挿絵として有名。本版は、数種ある五山版「五味禅」のうちの一つで、室町初期の刊行と見られている。かなりの補刻が行われているが、現存唯一の伝本。
