Summary[edit]

Description
English: Leonard Medical School and Hospital (1881 and 1910)

Shaw University established Leonard Medical School on its campus in 1880 with a faculty of two white Raleigh physicians. The Leonard Medical Building (left), or Leonard Hall, was named for Massachusetts philanthropist Judson Wade Leonard. It was erected in the summer of 1881 and contained lecture rooms, dissecting rooms, an amphitheater, and classrooms.
A 25-bed hospital opened in a frame building behind Leonard Hall in 1885. In 1910 a modern hospital facility, designed by Chatham County native Gaston Alonzo Edwards, the first licensed African American architect in the state, was erected next door to Leonard Hall.
In 1914 the Shaw trustees shortened the medical curriculum to two years, but the school and the hospital eventually closed in 1918. After Afterward, these structures were used for a variety of academic purposes, and still stand on South Wilmington Street across from the main Shaw campus.
