ervatory at the last opposition in 1909. These maps demonstrate strikingly the development ofthe canals from the melting cap, shown by the numberof canals visible in the southern hemisphere at the time, especially about the south pole, and by the absence ofcanals in the northern one, notably in the neighbourhoodof the north polar cap. The canals numbered 659 or 660 are the two great new-canals, of which the account has already been published, and of which the size enabled the advent to be establishedwith certainty. Several other examples of fresh origina-tion are to be seen on the charts, about which the evidencei^ hardly less conclusive. The white patches at some distance from the south pole August ii, 1910) NATURE mark the first frost of the auUimii in the planets southernhemisphere. These patches were photogiaphed, as werealso iiKiiiv of the canals. The number of the latter photographed at Ilagstaff since1905 is between fifty and one hundred.Boston, U.S..\., July 2i. NO. 2128, VOL. 84) 174 NATURE (August ii, 1910 Treatment of Storage Cells. In the Notes of Nature for July 28 (p. 118) refer-ence is made to an article on the renewal of sulphatedstorage cells by Mr. J. O. Hamilton. Readers of Naturemay be interested in a method of treatment I haveemployed for a number of years, which has given mostsatisfactory results. .\ strong (30-40 per cent.) solution of crude, commercialsodium hydroxide solution is prepared in a large iron potand is heated to boiling. The accumulator plates, previously washed thoroughly for several days in runningwater, are dipped into the boiling soda solution andallowed to remain for a period of from five to fifteenminutes, depending on the extent to which sulphating has taken place. They are then removed and washed forseveral davs in fresh water, after which they are placed in the jars withthoroughly charged. This treatment can happlied to any cellswhich have not under-gone structural disinte-gration, and whMiproperly carried
