| Description |
English: A new meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), in Menston. A new church under construction at the west of the branch of the A65 to Ilkley and the A6039 to Otley. This is not a LDS Temple. As of May 2011, there only two LDS Temples in the UK: the London England Temple, and the Preston England Temple. Temples are reserved for special forms of worship that can only be performed there, and entrance is restricted to Latter-day Saints in good standing; Temples are not even open on Sunday. Meetinghouses like the one depicted in this photograph are used for common Sunday worship services, fellowship, and cultural activities, and are open to all who wish to attend. There are hundreds of LDS meetinghouses in the UK. Meetinghouses are commonly, but mistakenly called churches by people not of that faith; like many non-conformist Christian denominations, Latter-day Saints use the term "church" for the group of organized believers, and not to describe a building. The term chapel is properly used as the name for the large room in a LDS meetinghouse with seating for the whole congregation which faces a pulpit. Additional rooms are also normally found in the meetinghouse, with the number and configuration varying based on age of the building and size of the local congregation. |
