New Orleans’ Drainage System Recognized as Historic Civil Engineering Landmark

Summary[edit]

Description
English: On May 23, 2023, Col. Cullen Jones attended a ceremony dedicating the New Orleans Drainage System as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This award from the American Society of Civil Engineers is given to projects that are at least 50 years old, have some special uniqueness, and have contributed to the development of the nation or a large region. The New Orleans Drainage system joins the ranks with other engineering feats including the Hoover Dam and the Eiffel Tower. Locally, the Huey P. Long Bridge, The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, and the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway have been past award recipients.

Since 1902, The Sewerage and Water Board has had control of the New Orleans Drainage System. USACE is a proud partner of The Sewerage and Water Board and through this partnership, 2.7 billion dollars has been invested in the Southeast Louisiana Area through projects like SELA

Notes: Dedication ceremony 23 May 2023 at new Drainage Pump Station 6 located at 345 Orpheum Avenue.
