topics. In 1863 he compiled The Battle Record ofthe American Rebellion, and also an edition of the United Statesrevenue laws in popular form, which latter was published bythe Tribune Association. He made other compilations of thoselaws at later dates, which had wide vogue. In 1863 he reenteredthe employment of John J. Hinchman & Co., and two years laterbecame managing partner. He is now senior partner of the firmof Dresser & Olmsted, of this city. Mr. Dresser made his home in Brooklyn in 1876. He was ap-pointed a member of the Board of Education in 1882, and wasreappointed in 1885 and 1888. At the end of his third term hewas not again appointed, for political reasons; but in 1894 hewas persuaded to reenter the board, and was reappointed fora fifth term in 1897. When the cities were consolidated thatboard became the School Board of the borough of Brooklyn.The Board of Education of the city of New York had supremeauthority over the whole metropolis. In February, 1899, he was reelected a member of theBoard of Education of the city of New York, and was electedvice-president. From his first entry into the Brooklyn board Mr. Dresserstrove to develop the high-school system. At that time therewas in Brooklyn only one high school for both sexes, with anattendance of about five hundred. Now, largely through hisefforts, there are four, with a fifth about to be established, andthe Girls High School alone has an enrolment of more thantwenty-two hundred. Mr. Dresser was a founder of theBrooklyn Training School for Teachers, and was instrumentalin introducing the kindergarten system into the public schools.He was the head of the committee of the Brooklyn board whichat the time of consolidation of the cities watched over the educa-tional interests of Brooklyn.
