the king.* *Aside from its wickedness, this attempted assassination ischiefly interesting to us of to-day on account of the punishmentwhich was inflicted. The king recovered, but the would-beassassin was handed over to the most excruciating torture thatcould be invented. From the time of his arrest, during nearlythree months, he was subjected to pain by bonds, chains and im-prisonment. On the morning of the day for his execution, hewas led at an early hour to the chamber of torture, suffering wasinflicted upon him to the verge of insensibility. Surgeons stoodby to announce a swoon, when the torture would cease. Thiscontinued for two hours, when wine and food were administered.At 3 oclock they set out slowly for the place of execution, butthe instruments of death not being ready, he was kept waiting toobserve their completion. At 5 oclock he was stripped naked,and laid upon a table where all could see him. His right handwas first of all burnt off, and then pieces of flesh were torn off
