es thick, contains 11 cubic feet of concrete perlinear foot of sewer. The value of concrete depends on the peculiarqualities of the materials used, and the careful manipulation of thesame. The angular shape of the chert pebbles, and the quantity of largesharp sand in the Hickman gravel, render it peculiarly adapted to makea strong and durable structure. Either hydraulic or ordinary fat limemay be used for foundations; but for sewers, the former would be pref-erable. The gravel should be freed from all pebbles larger than oneinch cube, which could be done cheaply by screening; then it shouldbe moIStened just sufficiently to cause the lime and cement to adhereOver the mass the lime should be sifted, whilst the mass was stirredso that a thin coating of the same would be on the pebbles and sandthe proport.on of lime and sand to be determined by the character ofthe structure required. One part of Louisville cement to seven partsgravel and sand would make a durable and strong sewer. PLATE n
