A painting of our own time on a house in the Schildgasse alsorecords the same thing. Like the Frauenkirche, the Hospital Church of the Holy Ghost, — whichis a few years older, and was built in the years 1331 —1341 by the wealthycitizen Conrad Gross, in connection with his hospital, — also awakens memories■of old Imperial splendour, for here were placed until the close of the 18^ cen-tury the Imperial Regalia and Relics, which had been entrusted by the Emperor THE IMPERIAL REGALIA. 33 Sigismund, in 1424, at the suit of the council, to the care of the city for ever.They had been brought to the city in a gay procession on the 22° March ofthat year. For this house, too, Diirer made hisportraits of Charles the Great and the Emperor Sigismund. The Regalia waspreserved in a silver shrine, which used to hang from the choir vault and isnow to be seen in the Germanic Museum.
