In1831 he went to England on a religious mission andsuspended the Repository, which was never resumed. We read of him later in a radical anti-slaverypaper39 of Salem, Ohio, that he had left the religioussect of the Quakers and had become a minister in theMethodist Episcopal Church. The editor of this paperquestions the sincerity of Bates anti-slavery sentimentson account of certain statements made by him in whichhe opposed the American Anti-Slavery Society, sayingthat it would destroy our country, our churches, andour civil and religious liberty. The same paper printed a condemnation of him asa friend of the slave-holder, since he upheld the Unionand the Church.
