Davis really observed on the floor ex-posed by their shafts, and what the real significance oftheir partial disclosure proved to be. Only their cen-tral shafts, it will be noted, were connected by drifts.The outer ones, sunk for test purposes, encountered thesmooth hard floor, more or less burned and reddened,which they mistook for continuation of the basin dis-closed at the center. With the entire floor of the mound exposed by oursurvey, the surmises of three-quarters of a centurywere set at rest. It was found that near the center of Exploration of the Mound City Group 508 the structure there had been erected originally a crema-tory basin measuring 8 feet in length and 5 feet inwidth. This basin had been used continuously andintensively, with the result that the underlying earthwas burned red to a depth of 12 inches. Moreover,long-continued use had necessitated repeated repairs,effected by replacing burned-out portions of its wallswith fresh layers of clay. In the end, the basin had

The new crematory basin, it will be noted on thefloor plan, was constructed at the north end of anddirectly in line with, the old basin; in fact, it actuallyoverlapped the latter to the extend of -about 18 inches.This new crematory basin measured 12 feet long and7 feet wide, and was the largest of the entire MoundCity group.
