Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Toll Shelter - detail of stonework - geograph.org.uk - 1650479.jpg |
English: Old Toll Shelter - detail of stonework. One wonders how many thousands of car passengers, and walkers probably, have passed this insignificant tiny stone building on the roadside on the B3192 at SX 9245 7537. It is locally recognised as having been a temporary toll shelter, possibly just used weekly, as a shelter for a toll collector to use on market days. It is an interesting feature to spot, but to view one must be very careful of the traffic passing by as there is no footpath along this stretch of this busy road into Teignmouth.
It is similarly recorded as such on the Tollhouse National database (see www.turnpikes.org.uk) where it is stated as being "Little Haldon (Hut), dating from 1823, on the Teignmouth to Exeter turnpike." It is described as the 'Old Toll Shelter' on the Higher Exeter Road (B3192), opposite 'Hi-Heather'. 1650475 |
