Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Wreck on River Tay - geograph.org.uk - 122137.jpg |
English: Old Wreck on River Tay. Taken from path from Wormit to Balmerino. The wreck is that of an American naval boat once used to salvage torpedoes in the Firth of Clyde. It was brought to the east coast by a salvage operator to help retrieve steel plates from the wreck of HMS Argyll (a Devonshire class cruiser commissioned in 1905) on Bell Rock, where it had run aground in 1915. http://www.bellrock.org.uk/misc/misc_argyll.htm
The American torpedo boat was stripped and used as a barge with a crane fitted to it. Once all the 12-ton steel plates had been retrieved and off-loaded at Tayport, the barge (known as the 'Dunoon' because that was where it had been obtained from) was moored here and later, for unknown reasons, sank. |
