Text Appearing Before Image:
am, called on Lord Lansdowne alittle before his death, and showed him his epitaph 174 OLD AND NEW LONDON. (Holland House. of his own composing. Here lies Henry VassallFox, Lord Holland, Sec, who was drowned whilesitting in his elbow-chair, He died in this house, inhis elbow-chair, of water in the chest. The following is a character of Lord Holland, written by a friend :— The benignant, the accom-plished Lord Holland is no more ; the last and bestof the Whigs of the old school, the long-tried friendof civil and religious liberty, has closed a life which to have a hearing for every argument, lest a truthshould be shut out from his mind. The charm ofhis conversation will never be forgotten by thosewho have enjoyed it. His mind was full of anec-dote, which was always introduced with the mostfelicitous appositeness, and exquisitely narrated. Lord Holland had lived with all the most dis-tinguished and eminent men of the last forty years;but his knowledge of the greatest, the most eloquent.
Text Appearing After Image:
IIOLLAML) HOUbE, KROM THK NORTH. has been an ornament and a bulwark of the Liberalcause. He was one of Englands worthies in thepristine sense of the word ; and a more finishedexample of the steady statesman, the urbanegentleman, and the accomplished scholar, neverexisted. Lord Hollands was a fine mind, and afine mind in perpetual exercise of the most health-ful kind. It was observed of him that he wasnever found without a good book in his hand. Hisunderstanding was thoroughly masculine, his tasteof a delicacy approaching perhaps to a fault. Hisopinions he maintained earnestly and energetically, but with a rare, a beautiful candour. Nothing wasproscribed with him. As of old, the meanest way-farers used to be received hospitably, lest angelsshould be turned away; so Lord Holland seemed the most witty, or the most leavned, had not indis-posed him to appreciate merits and talents of a lessgreat order. He was a friend of merit wherever itcould be found, and knew how to value and toencourage
