Ihe Chapel of St. Benedict is separated from thesouth transept and the ambulatory, or chancel aisle,simply by a screen of monuments and their railings.At the east end, where stood the altar of St. Bene-dict, is the tomb of Frances, Countess of Hertford,whose eftigy, as Malcolm states, lies precisely A\i OLD AND NEW LONDON. \V ehimiuitcv Abbey, where the candlesticks and host formerly stood.The oldest tomb in this chapel is that of Simon deLangham, who was a monk, prior, and afterwardsAbbot of Westminster, Archbishop of Canterbury,and a cardinal. He died in 1376. The monumentis of the altar form, with the sides adorned withquatrefoils and shields of arms, and on it lies an Master Simon de Wells live marks and a half todefray his expenses, in bringing from the city acertain brass image, to set upon the tomb of hisdaughter Catherine; and for paying Simon deGloucester, the kings goldsmith, seventy marks,for a silver image for the like purpose. Between the Chapel of St. Benedict and thatof St. Edmund is a monument to the children ofHenry HI. Although it is now sadly defaced, thismonument appears to have been a very elaborateone, richly adorned with mosaic work. In thestate records, there is the kings order for the erectionof a monument in this place, and for allowing projection upon the passage leading from PalaceYard to Poets Corner, St. Edmund was Arch-bishop of Canterbury, and the anniversary held athis altar was on the i6th of November. An ancientwooden screen separates this chapel from the aisle.Here are several interesting tombs and monuments.On the east side of the doorway is the alabastermonument of John of Eltham, second son ofEdward II., and so called from Eltham, in Kent,the place of his birth.
