Summary[edit]

Description
English: "[Thomas] Hely's original residence, a fine type of early colonial architecture, with immensely thick walls and squat doors and windows, stands...surrounded by a lovely garden, English plants and flowers were in full bloom." - Frank Walker

The owner of Old Guard House, Frederick Augustus Hely, was the Principal Superintendent of Convicts at the time that he purchased "Wyoming" in 1824. Hely was born at Belfast, Ireland in 1794. There are various theories as to what unspeakable horrors awaited convicts in the Guard House as punishment, but it is most likely that this was used as a Garden House for Georgina Hely.
