y Democrats were rottenat the core that it was impossible for them to preventdesertions. Marshall, Quays candidate for speaker,was elected by one majority, and that w^as accom-plished by one Democrat voting directly for Marshalland several withholding their votes without pairs.Quay thus had the control of the committees and thepower of the house, and it was wielded by Marshall withthe single purpose of aiding Quays election. On the 15th of January Quay w^as elected for theunexpired term of four years in the Senate, receiving26 votes in the Senate, with 12 for Guffey, Democrat; 10 for Dalzell and one each for Charles Emory Smithand George E. Huff, Independents. In the houseQuay received 104 votes to 44 for Guifey, 24 for Dalzell, 11 for Smith, 6 for Huff, 3 for Stewart and one each forMcCormack, McConway, Harris, Tubbs, Olm.stead andSwallow, v/ith five not voting. Quays election wasaccomplished by one Democratic-Populist senator andone Democratic representative voting directly for him,
