om non-union of fracture. From a prep-aration in Kings College Museum. Fig. 8. Eeparation of Fracture. This is produced by theeffusion and organization of lymph. After fracture of most of the bones, a quantity of lymph is effusedinto the cellular tissue, around the broken part. This, in two orthree weeks, becomes converted into a cartilaginous capsule, called aprovisional callus, which completely surrounds the fracture, and ad-heres firmly to the bone above and below. In two or three weeksmore, the provisional callus ossifies, and then the use of the bone isrestored. But at this time, the ends of the fractured bones are notdirectly united, and if the provisional callus were removed, theywould still be separable. In the course of five or six months, how-ever, bony union takes place between the bones, and the callus isabsorbed. After fracture of the cranium, acromion, olecranon, patella, cervixfemoris, or of any bone invested with synovial membrane, noprovisional callus is formed. pn 3:
