Thesupply trains of the great armies num-bered thousands of six-mule teamsand when on the march they wouldstretch out for many miles. It was inMay, in 1863, that one of these wagontrains safely reached Brandy Station,Virginia. Its journey had been oneof imminent danger as both armieswere in dire need of provisions andthe capture of a wagon train was asgood fortune as victory in a skirmish.To protect this train from a desperatedash of the Confederate cavalry itwas parked on the outskirts of afinest that protected it from enviouseyes and guarded by the Union lines.One of Mr. Bradys cameras tookthis photograph during this criticalmoment. It shows but one divisionof one corps. As there were threedivisions in each corps, and therewere many corps in the army, someidea of the immense size of thetrains may be gained by this view.The train succeeded in reaching itsdestination at a time of much need.

TheGovernment, as the years passed, became impressedwith the value of this wonderful record, but has nowofficially stated with positive finality: It is evidentthat these in-valuable neg-atives are rapid-ly disappearingand in order toinsure their pre-servation it isordered thathereafter neg-atives shall notbe loaned toprivate partiesfor exploitationor to subserveprivate interestin any man-ner. The geniusBrady, in pos-session of $25,-000, w h i c h,came from theGovernmenttoo late to savehis property, entirely lost track of his collection. Misfortune seemedto follow him and his Government money was soon ex-hausted.
