command of this division,Pope said to his men: I have cometo you from the West, where we havealways seen the backs of our ene-mies. The Confederates were map-ping routes on a large scale. Braggwas to advance on Louisville and Cin-cinnati ; Lee was to invade Marylandand march upon Washington, Balti-more and Philadelphia. The captureof these three cities was to assurethe Independence of the Confederacy.Lee had 150,000 men and two-thirdsof them were to be taken on this in-vasion. This is the scheme that wasbeing worked out when the two arm-ies met on the thirtieth day of Augustat Manassas. The Confederate troopspoured onto the Federal lines andforced them back beyond Bull Rununtil the darkness of the night stoppedthe pursuit. Bridges were burned andrailroads destroyed by the UnionArmy as they withdrew toward Wash-ington, making brave stands to holdback the enemy, only to be drivenback to the banks of the Potomac with7,800 missing and dead, while theConfederate lines had 3,700 vacancies.
