DE SINT-BAVO TE HAARLEM. — DE SINT-LAURENS TE ALKMAAR. 65 ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis, geheel en al den ouden grondvorm te geven,dien eener kruiskerk met kooromgang en zijbeuken met zijkapellen. Eene onzer grootste kerken met houten overwelving zijnde, zit daarinjuist zijn tekort, zijn fout; een zóó bekwaam meester, als hij toonde tezijn, had ons hier een ander, een karakteristieker ontwerp moeten leveren. Beoosten harer oude Sint-Bavo was Haarlem op het laatst der XIVdeeeuw begonnen met den bouw van het koor eener nieuwe, eener veelgrootere Sint-Bavo, dat in 1397 blijkens een daartoe toen verleende aflaatnog in vollen opbouw, omstreeks 1400 voltooid was. Eerst in 1445—47volgde de bouw van het dwarsschip, waarna in 1470 de oude kerkafgebroken en dien van het langsschip der nieuwe kerk begonnen werd. In het jaar 1502 werd met den steenen kruistoren aangevangen, dochhet daarvan opgetrokkene werd, als zijnde te zwaar
