Van haar eerste bestaan als stad is echter bij de herhaaldeen bijna algeheele verwoestingen, die zij zoowel tijdens als na hetvertrek der Romeinen heeft ondergaan, niets overgebleven dan eenigefundeeringsresten, dan enkele hypocausten, graven, urnen en munten.Niets, behalve een klein gedeelte van den ouden Heerweg enhet ondergedeelte dier Porta Regia, breed binnen haar rechtstands-pijlers slechts 2.20 M. Bij de slooping der Onze Lieve Vrouwe Poortin het jaar 1868, vond men op + 3 M. beneden de toenmaligebestrating den voet dier oud-Romeinsche poort met den er door- )) In zijn „Vraagstukken, in de Geschiedenis van Nijmegcns Voortijd heeftH. Dat Maastricht reeds zóó vroegtijdig eene verdedigbare stadmoet zijn geweest, blijkt ten vollen uit het feit, dat bisschop Servatiusten jare 384, uit vrees voor de Hunnen welke Gallië waren binnen-gevallen, den zetel van zijn bisdom van uit het bijgelegen Tongerennaar hier overplaatste. Daardoor eene Bisschopsstad geworden, deeerste en langen tijd ook de eenigste in ons land, bleef zij zulks,naar men meent, tot in het jaar 721, toen die zetel opnieuw en welnaar Luik verplaatst werd Behalve Maastricht waren er wel is waar nog andere Romein-sche castra of centra te onzent, maar van deze is, althans voor zooverdit nu nog is na te gaan, behalve Nijmegen, geen enkele de kerngeworden eener nog bestaande stad.
