at. The bull-dog stood too short, while its massive jawswere an added protection. White Fangdarted in and out unscathed, while Chero-kees wounds increased. Both sides of hisneck and head were ripped and slashed. He bled freely, but showed no signs of be-ing disconcerted. He continued his plod-ding pursuit, though once, for the momentbaffled, he came to a full stop and blinkedat the men who looked on, at the sametime wagging his stump of a tail as an ex-pression of his willingness to fight. After the break-up of the ice on the Porcupine he . . .paddled down that stream to where it effected itsfunction with the Yukon. Painting by Frank E. Si-hoonover. White Fang 601 in and out, and ever inflicting damage. And still the bulldog, with grim certitude, toiled after him. Sooner or later he wouldaccomplish his purpose, get the grip thatwould win the battle. In the meantimehe accepted all the punishment the othercould deal him. His tufts of ears had be-come tassels, his neck and shoulders wereslashed in a score of places, and his verylips were cut and bleeding—all from thoselightning snaps that were beyond his fore-seeing and guarding. Time and again White Fang had at-tempted to knock Cherokee off his feet;but the difference in their height was toogreat. Cherokee was too squat, too closeto the ground. White Fang tried the trickonce too often. The chance came in oneof his quick doublings and counter-circlings.He caught Cherokee with head turnedaway as he whirled more slowly. Hiss
