Especially from Chesapeake Baysouthward there are hordes of the va-rious wild fowl, and some shore birds,such as plovers, sandpipers, and snipes;while northward from Massachusettswe may find on the cold, wind-sweptocean such hardy birds as the auks,guillemots, puffins, gannets, and eiderand harlequin ducks. Sometimes offCape Cod during the Christmas holi-days I have had a veritable feast for eyeand soul in the abundance of these livelywild birds, so shy and innocent of civ-ilization. Southward, say from Washington,the typical land birds, in addition tosome already mentioned, are suchspecies as the cardinal, mocking bird,red-headed and red-bellied woodpeckers, 63<
