ugh the heart of the country. Itis much longer, and though the hillscenery is said to be very fine the ele-vation is so irregular and the countryso primitive, it is quite unsuitable forbicycling. There is ahighway ex-t end i n gnorthwardnearly 500miles, but asit terminatesnowhere it israrely trav-eled by for-eigners. Thehighwaysaredivided intothree classes:the nationalroads be-tween Tokioand thetreaty ports, the ancestralshrines andthe militarystations; theprefectureroads be-tween thesestations, andthird, the vil-lage roads. The Tokaidobeing a na-tional high-way is caredfor at th eimperial ex-pense, and isby far themost suit-able for thebicycle. After gratifying his curiosity, the officialmade a dem-onstration onhis lightningcalculator, aframe likethose whichare thoughtto be so help-ful to chil-dren ; thenhe drew apicture of awire-fenceon a piece oftissue-paper,whi ch infaith andfear I be-lieved wouldentitle meto my ma-chine at theother end ofthe line. That after-noon, withtwo hourssun, I left To-kio througha smooth ,wide street, over a moatwhich abridge ofsingle arctook at aleap. Theembank-ment wasrich with the wonderful greens of thelow flat branches of the pines that looklike dragons from the lacquered screens. In the distance were the staring wallsand heavy roof of the palace of theMikado,
