In England this particular stroke isknown as the American service, ratherthan the twist, as we know it here, andthe history of the stroke justifies its name.Malcolm Whitman has generally beencredited with the invention. of the over-hand twist delivery. But Whitmans reverse twist, was avery different service from that whichmade the stroke so famous. Long beforeWhitmans day, the English had becomepast-masters in using the underhand twists,and they had many varieties, giving theball peculiar bounds. They learned touse the twist in their overhand service,
