With the exception of a month or twoin summer polo is played throughout theyear in California, but it is from NewYears until the latter part of April thatthere are held the big tournaments forwhich men and ponies cross continentsand even oceans. Santa Barbara holdsits tournament between the Coronadoand San Mateo dates. A summer meetis also held at Santa Barbara and islargely attended by coast players. Polo was introduced into Californiaabout twenty-five years ago, first in thevicinity of San Francisco and later inthe South, near Los Angeles. The clubswhich first played in the State, the Bur-lingame, the Santa Monica, and the Riv-erside, have disappeared in the steadyshift of the years and their members havescattered to newer and more vigorousorganizations. The Center of the Game Coronado Beach, across the bay fromSan Diego, is now the center of Westernpolo, and it is there, playing withinsound of the crash of the Pacifics break-ers, that most of the visiting teams maketheir headquarters when not attendingthe tournaments farther north.
